On June 12, 2019 from 13.00 till 17.00h, the following pre-conference courses will be organized. To join one of these courses, you have to register (see general WEON-registration form). The costs for joining a pre-conference course are € 25 for VvE-members/Bachelor or Master-students and € 35 for Non VvE-members. The language of the pre-conference courses will be English.

Pre-conference course 1

Introduction to causal inference in observational research: causal mediation and propensity scoring

Organisation: Sacha la Bastide-van Gemert (UMCG) and Douwe Postmus (UMCG)
Participants: minimum of 10 and maximum of 25 participants

Answering causal research questions where random experimentation is not feasible is an issue often encountered in any research field where observational data is dominating, especially in that of life course epidemiology. In this workshop, we introduce tools and methods which enable the researcher to tackle the issue of causal inference in observational research. We introduce theory and use of causal graphs (graphical models), as well as the concept of counterfactuals. In doing so, we not only address the issue of confounding (and show how to detect and correct for it!), but also provide introductions to mediation analysis and propensity scoring. The workshop consists of introductory lectures and accompanying causal exercises. A basic understanding of medical statistics is strongly recommended.

We welcome all epidemiologists –junior and senior- who like to get acquainted with the use of causal graphs and causal inference in general, as well as those interested in an introduction into causal mediation analysis and propensity scoring, to this workshop!

Organisation: VvE Working Group Junior Epidemiologists
Participants: minimum of 15 and maximum of 40 participants

The VvE Working Group Junior Epidemiologists organizes another WEON preconference this year! The preconference will be focused on your role as an epidemiologist in the world outside of epidemiology. You will receive information about ways to present your epidemiological research to society (e.g. through news messages or social media). In addition, professionals outside of epidemiology will present their perspective on epidemiology and you will learn how you can take this perspective into account when communicating your findings to a broader audience.

Pre-conference course 3

Economic evaluation: how to enrich epidemiological data with costs and simulation models to support healthcare decision making. Applications in alcohol policy and tobacco control

Organisation: Talitha Feenstra (UMCG, RIVM) and Thea van Asselt (UMCG)
Participants: minimum of 10 and maximum of 40 participants

Cost-effectiveness, budget impact analysis, social cost benefit analysis, cost of illness. Ever wanted to understand what all this terminology means? This is your chance! Recent applications in alcohol policy and tobacco control will illustrate how epidemiological data from various sources can be used in combination with costing information in simulation models to inform policy makers about the long term costs and consequences of various policies. Dr P van Gils/Dr GA De Wit (RIVM) and Dr B Wijnen (Maastricht University & Trimbos institute) will act as guest lecturers and present their cost benefit analyses.

The workshop will start with an overview of the various types of economic evaluations and explain the most important characteristics of each of these. We will discuss what type of analysis is most suitable for what kind of research question, using an interactive work form.

Then the social cost-benefit analysis will be explained in more detail. Social cost-benefit analysis (in Dutch: maatschappelijke kosten baten analyse – MKBA) supports mostly government decisions by exploring costs and effects of policy alternatives using a broad perspective. An example could be whether to implement a campaign to reduce alcohol misuse in adolescents. A social cost-benefit analysis for this decision would include costs of the campaign, but also current and future costs of alcohol abuse and its consequences, within the health care sector, but also e.g costs of crimes and traffic accidents. Naturally, epidemiological data are an important input to obtain valid results in such an analysis.

In the second part of the workshop, guest speakers from RIVM and Trimbos will present two recent applications of social cost-benefit analysis with regard to policies to reduce alcohol misuse and tobacco use.

Assessment in Epi-teaching– get inspired!

Organisation: Noha El-Baz (UMCG), Iris van Rooij (RadboudUMC) and Femmie de Vegt (RadboudUMC), also on behalf of the ‘VvE Speergroep Onderwijs’
Participants: minimum of 8 and maximum of 30 participants

This preconference is about assessment methods in epidemiology. Various possibilities for the assessment of epidemiological knowledge and skills will be discussed and practiced.
All epidemiologists being active in teaching are more than welcome to brainstorm and discuss about this issue!

In the first part of the afternoon we will deal with the assessment of knowledge of epidemiological methods. We will provide a short overview of the possibilities, after which we will discuss them and exchange best practices with each other. The participants will receive a digital questionnaire beforehand to inquire about methods used for assessment by themselves. In the second part of the afternoon we will focus on the development and use of rubrics for the assessment of epidemiological internships. We will learn what rubrics are, how to develop them and share our experiences in using rubrics for assessment.
