VvE Student award

Candidates

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor or master students who have trained in epidemiology. Students from postdoctoral courses such as CARE, NIHES and POE/EpidM who present research conducted in the course of their affiliation are not eligible for the VvE student award.
  • The research must have been done before the date of graduation.
  • Graduation must not precede the deadline for submission by more than one year.

Application

Candidates must apply for the VvE student award at the time of abstract submission. Applicants must also complete the nomination form (in Dutch) that can be downloaded from the website and send this along with a college card that is no more than a year old and the abstract to the secretary of the VvE (g.honing(at)erasmusmc.nl).

The deadline for submission of the application form is the same as the deadline for submission for abstract submission, i.e. March 1 2010. The student will receive an e-mail confirming the application and explaining the procedure.

Selection and nomination of the abstracts for presentation during the WEON

The organizing committee will select and nominates the abstracts. The maximum number of nominations is six.

The students will receive a letter informing them of their nomination at least six weeks before the WEON. The application form and the abstracts of the nominees will be sent to the members of the jury.

Presentations

The nominees' presentations may either be all in one session, or in separat sessions according to the topics of their abstracts. This choice will be made by the organizing committee.

Judging the presentations

Each student will give a ten minute presentation of  his or her research, followed by ten-minute discussion . The presentations will be graded for content, structure, delivery, and use of audiovisual aids. The discussion will also be graded. The grades will be used as an aid in the decision.

Jury

The jury will consist of three members, all senior researchers. The chairman is from the WEON organizing department, the other two members are from the organizing departments of the previous and the next WEON. If possible, various sub-disciplines of epidemiology will be represented in the jury.

 

The members of the jury assess the nominees' abstracts and presentations with the help of the following criteria (in Dutch):

 

After all the presentations have taken place, the jury will convene to decide on the winner. The chairman will write a report. The members of the jury or the selection committee must not be associated with the nominees.

VvE Student award ceremony

The prize consists of a framed certificate, a bouquet of flowers and prize money of €250.-. The award ceremony will take place during the final session of the WEON. The jury report will be read out during the ceremony and will be handed to the winner. Photos of the event and the winning abstract will be published in the Epistel.
