VvE Publication award
Candidates
This prize will be awarded for the best epidemiologic publication by a junior researcher (PhD student). Requirements for application are:
- The junior researcher is first author of the paper.
- The paper has been published, is in press or has been accepted for publication in the year preceding the WEON-conference.
- Each junior can nominate only one of his or her publications. The publication cannot be a report or a thesis,
- The publication must be either in Dutch or in English.
- The junior researcher can have received his or her PhD no more than three years before the application deadline. A PhD is not necessary for application.
- The junior researcher is a member of the VvE.
Application
The junior researcher must e-mail a PDF-file of the paper to the secretary of the VvE (g.honing(at)erasmusmc.nl). In the e-mail, the junior researcher must give the (estimated) date of PhD, and, if the paper is not yet published, the date of acceptance and journal name.
Deadline for application is 1 March 2010.
The junior researcher wil receive an e-mail confirming the application.
Selection of the winning publication
Selection and judging of the publications will follow the steps listed below:
- Pre-selection: each publication will be graded by three members of the Board of the VvE. All are senior researchers with a registration as epidemiologist-B. Grading will be done according to predetermined criteria. (Appendix 1)
- Based on the grading, the three to five papers that scored the highest will be presented to a jury.

Jury
The jury consists of three members (all full professors) of the Dutch Epidemiology College. The chairman is from the WEON organizing department, the other two members are from the organizing departments of the previous and the next WEON. If possible, various subdisciplines of epidemiology will be represented in the jury .
The members of the jury will judge the publications on the basis of predetermined criteria and will select the winner after deliberation. The jury will write a report on why they have chosen this publication. The members of the jury or the preselection committee must not be associated with the nominees.
VvE Publication award ceremony
The prize consists of a framed certificate, a bouquet of flowers and €1,000.- in prize money, to be used for pre-approved conference attendence or an epidemiology course. The award ceremony will take place during the WEON. The winner will be asked to present his or her work in a 10-minute presentation, after which the jury report will be read out. Photos of the event and the winning paper will be published in the Epistel.
Expenditure restraints
The prize money must be used either to visit a conference or to take a course in epidemiology.
The winner must submit a request to the VvE describing the conference or course he or she wishes to attend. This request will be assessed by the member of the board of the VvE responsible for the WEON-prizes. The VvE will inform the winner within fourteen days of its decision.
A written report of the conference or course must be submitted to the VvE to be published in Epistel. After receipt of the report and of proof of subscription and payment, the costs with a maximum of €1,000.- will be refunded to the winner.
The prize money must be used within two years.
